4 / 10 To experience “The Strange Ones,” one must summon all patience humanly possible, as directors Lauren Wolkstein and Christopher Radcliff (who also scripts) aren’t going to make the cinematic journey easy on anyone. It’s cryptic work from the indie film-minded duo, and paced deliberately, offering a slow leak of symbolism, heavy breathing, and enigmatic behaviors that often make the 76 minute run time feel like 76 years. Perhaps for some viewers, the artfulness of Radcliff and Wolkstein’s efforts might be appealing, with the picture refusing the comfort of appealing characters and easy answers. The Strange Ones is a Thriller – Drama written and directed by duo Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein in their debut. The cast includes Alex Pettyfer and James Freedson-Jackson in lead roles, while Emily Althaus, Gene Jones, Owen Campbell, Tobias Campbell and Marin Ireland playing supporting roles. Brian McOmber has scored music for the film and Todd Banhazl heading the cinematography. Mysterious events surround two travellers as they make their way across a remote American landscape. On the surface, all seems normal, but what appears to be a simple vacation soon gives way to a dark and complex web of secrets. Who are the two travellers? What happens to them? Will they survive the unexpected incidents? Watch the movie to unfold the story. Roger Ebert| 6.3/10 Stars The film is worth seeing because, regardless of things that I wish had been done better or differently, it feels like the beginning of a major filmmaking career, and because Pettyfer and Freedson-Jackson are so strong. The latter gives one of the great juvenile performances of recent years. He’s so unsettling and does such an intelligent job of capturing the dislocated feeling of a child suffering traumas that few adults could endure, that the image of his face lost in miserable thought becomes nearly as horrifying as the specific acts of violence in the movie. The acting in the supporting roles is less spectacular (because what the film needs from them is a lot more modest) but ultimately more affecting, in particular, Althaus as the motel manager and Gene Jones (“No Country for Old Men”) as a senior who runs a work camp for delinquent boys. Jones and Freedson-Jackson have such a warm and mutually respectful rapport that I wouldn’t mind seeing a whole film built around the two of them. Los Angeles Times| 7/10 Stars The Strange Ones” is a mysterious puzzle box of a film, anchored by a quietly mesmerizing performance by James Freedson-Jackson as a young boy on the road with an older companion. A bearded and bulked-up Alex Pettyfer is nearly unrecognizable as his travelling buddy, whom we’re never sure is a protector or a threat.Co-writers/directors Christopher Radcliff and Lauren Wolkstein slowly parcel out and then scramble information about the two. Are they brothers on a camping trip? But it’s an artful, boundary-pushing debut from Radcliff and Wolkstein, with breakthrough performances from Freedson-Jackson, and Pettyfer, perhaps signalling a new direction in his career.
